So, suddenly Leighton is tough on crime? Even after stating in June that crime in the city is down (though the crime of hiring his brother is ok, I guess)? Well, his 6-month housing thing bruited in the paper this morning isn't going to do anything. Along with the fact that any court challenge would almost surely throw it out, as the post in the CV today about Leighton points out, just as most of "our" criminals are imports from Jersey, where I had the misfortune to live for 10 years, Phila and NY, so are most of our absentee landlords from outside county lines. Good luck in enforcing this if the family is, say devout Muslims who have never done anything wrong and say, a cousin visiting robs a mini-mart) and the landlord is in Billings, Montana and can't be reached. It's a nice PR move, but it's reality is that it is probably almost totally useless.
CV Post, responding to Leighton story: I see major administrative nightmares with this one when a large majority of your landlords are not even in this state. How are you going to enforce and litigate against them? And, with so many blighted properties owned by out-of-staters, what has the city done about them? Properties sit for years in deplorable condition with no real recourse against the owners...........I don't have enough faith in this administration abilities in handling the logistics of this.
