Gene Goodwin, who taught me layout in Penn State, would be turning in his grave. Sometimes 'bumped heds' get through in some inner pages, but I have never, I don't think, seen the two headlines on the TOP of the front page, both egregiously loud and in vile fonts, bumped so badly. Whoever designed this monster should be kicked out of the door like right now. For those who don't know newspaper layout, here's one post form Wiki Answers.
Bumped headlines or Heads... when two headlines over two stories are placed side by side on a newspaper page. It creates a competition between the two stories. Called Bumping. Usually the story on the left gets read... and once the reader is done? The reader invariably turns the page. leaving the poor story on the right unread and very lonely. It gets "bumped" because of the bumping heads. Aesthetically it is anathema to old editors and journalism professors. Pedants like me in other words. Is it a sin? Of course not. Should it be avoided? Of course. terrance Gavan The Haliburton Highlander Haliburton, Ontario, Canada
